Champions League knockout stage is set for African super stars!

While the Champions League anthem isn’t blaring just yet for the quarterfinals, the anticipation is building!  As a football fan, you know this stage of the competition is where legends are truly made.  This year, African players could be at the forefront of some incredible moments. Here’s a look at a few footballers from Black African countries who could be instrumental in their teams’ success:

  • Sadio Mané (Liverpool, Senegal): Salah’s Senegalese teammate is another key attacker for the Reds. Mané is a nightmare for defenders with his blistering pace and power. He can take on defenders one-on-one or use his intelligent runs to get behind the backline. Mané is also a fantastic finisher, making him a constant goal threat.
  • Édouard Mendy (Chelsea, Senegal):  A world-class shot-stopper, Mendy has been a rock in goal for Chelsea.  His reflexes, agility, and ability to command his area are all top-notch. With Mendy between the posts, Chelsea know they have a goalkeeper who can steal them points, especially in tight matches.
  • Kalidou Koulibaly (Chelsea, Senegal):  The Senegalese captain is a rock in defense for Chelsea. Koulibaly is strong, good in the air, and reads the game exceptionally well.  He’s a leader on and off the pitch for both club and country. With Koulibaly marshalling the defense, Chelsea can be confident they’ll be difficult to break down.

The brightest start – out of many

These are just a few of the many talented Black African footballers who could be making a big impact in the Champions League this season.  The stage is set for them to shine on the biggest stage in club football. Who will rise to the occasion? Tune in to the quarterfinals to find out!
